Goethe (1749-1832) qui a traversé tous
les courants de son temps, les Lumières,
le préromantisme, le néoclassicisme, et
dont la carrière littéraire a débuté par un
succès européen ( Les Souffrances du jeune
Werther ), est devenu très vite la forme
incarnée du « génie » : poète, romancier,
dramaturge, savant, diplomate (Napoléon
lui-même a souhaité le rencontrer en 1808),
conseiller politique du duc de Weimar. C'est
de cette ville qu'avec Herder, Schiller et
Wieland, il rayonna sur toute la vie culturelle
de son temps, et qu'il contribua à forger
l'allemand moderne. Il fut l'idéal de la
bourgeoisie éclairée et, comme le résume
Nietzsche : « On pourrait dire qu'en un sens,
le xix e siècle a également aspiré à atteindre
tout ce que Goethe a lui-même cherché à
atteindre personnellement : l'universalité
de la compréhension, de l'acceptation, une
