Biographie

Issu d'une famille puritaine implantée à Salem, Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) est très tôt orphelin de père. Elevé par une mère que son veuvage a rendu austère, il grandit loin du monde. Ses premières tentatives littéraires sont des échecs et il lui faut attendre 1850 et le succès de La Lettre écarlate pour être consacré. Suivront des chefs-d'oeuvre tels que La Maison aux sept pignons en 1851 ou Le Livre des merveilles l'année suivante. Il est en outre l'auteur de nombreuses nouvelles. Maître américain du « gothique provincial », son traitement de la condition humaine et son analyse de la société puritaine font d'Hawthorne l'un des plus grands auteurs de la littérature américaine.
