Biographie

Léon Tolstoï (1828-1910) est un des géants des lettres russes. Ses romans et ses nouvelles se mêlent de réflexion morale et philosophique. Mobilisé lors de la guerre de Crimée (1853-1856), il témoigne de son expérience militaire dans les Récits de Sébastopol (1855). Guerre et Paix (1869), une reconstitution historique des guerres napoléoniennes, est aussi une réflexion sur la violence des conflits. Entrepris en 1873, Anna Karénine trouvera sa forme définitive en 1877, après que Le Messager russe, qui le publiait en feuilleton, eut désapprouvé son dernier chapitre. Tolstoï entame alors une quête spirituelle et morale qui se reflète dans La Mort d'Ivan Ilitch (1886), La Sonate à Kreutzer (1889) et plus encore dans Résurrection (1899), dont le héros rencontre la figure du Christ. À la fin de sa vie, il devient un maître à penser, prônant une vie simple et morale. Apôtre de la non-violence, il inspire directement le Mahatma Gandhi et Romain Rolland.
