1596-1650 - Gentilhomme de la petite noblesse de Touraine, René Descartes fut élève des jésuites et hésita longtemps sur le choix d'une carrière. Il servit dans les armes sous la direction du prince d'Orange. Il finit par s'exiler volontairement en Hollande afin d'y vivre en solitaire, après une vie mondaine à Paris. Il revint plusieurs fois en France où il rencontra Pascal (1647). Il céda enfin aux instances de Christine de Suède et se rendit à Stokolm où il mourut en 1650. A seize ans, avant Pascal, Descartes a déclaré que la dignité de l'homme réside dans sa pensée. Pour cette conviction, il mérite une grande place dans l'histoire de la connaissance qui conduit à la libre-pensée.
