Ryszard Kapuscinski est né en 1932 à Pinsk (Pologne). En 1945, sa famille s'installe à Varsovie, où il entame des études d'histoire et de lettres. Dès les années 50, il devient correspondant en Asie et au Moyen Orient, puis en Amérique latine et en Afrique. Auteur de Négus, du Shah ou la démesure du pouvoir, d'Imperium et d'une quinzaine d'autres titres, ses ?uvres se sont vendues à plus d'un million d'exemplaires à travers le monde. Son ouvrage Ebène a été élu Meilleur Livre de l'Année 2000 par la rédaction de Lire et a été couronné par le prix Tropique 2002 (attribué par le Sénat). Il est mort en janvier 2007 à Varsovie.
Il a fait du journalisme un véritable mode de vie, et s'est imposé par un style très personnel, mêlant documentaire et littérature, souci quasi ethnologique du terrain et réflexion politique.
