Sebastião Salgado a commencé sa carrière de photographe professionnel à Paris en 1973 et a travaillé avec les agences de photographie Sygma, Gamma et Magnum Photos. En 1994, avec son épouse Lélia Wanick Salgado, il fonde Amazonas images qui le représente en exclusivité. Les projets photographiques de Salgado ont été l'objet de nombreux livres et expositions dont Sahel, L'Homme en détresse (1986), Autres Amériques (1986), La Main de l'homme (1993), Terra (1997), Exodes (2000), Les Enfants de l'exode (2000), Africa (2007) Genesis (2013) et Koweït, un désert en feu (2016).
