There are few more potent and distinctive manifestations of the Chinese aesthetic than the great tradition of Chinese landscape painting, presented here through seventy-nine works of art. The exploration of mankind's relationship with nature, as the physical manifestation of the enduring and regenerative forces of the universe, is the grand and eternally inspiring theme of the genre. Chinese landscape may bear scant resemblance to what the eye may see - but it does express with great imagination our responses to the majesty of nature. The paintings are from the Ming and Qing dynasties (14th - 19th centuries) and selected from the outstanding collection of the Shanghai Collection. Works are painted both in the colourful court style as well as in the refined literati mode of pale colour, or in the most subtle technique of all - shades of pure ink. There are also exquisite examples of hanging scrolls, handscrolls, album leafs and fan paintings.
