Franck Ferrand s'est passionné dès l'enfance pour ce château et ces jardins, qu'il fréquente assidument depuis trente ans. Après un troisième cycle dédié à la cour de Louis XV, il a publié plusieurs articles sur le domaine, ainsi qu'une monographie sur son destin contemporain : Ils ont sauvé Versailles (Perrin, 2003), rééditée en poche sous le titre Versailles après les rois (Tempus, 2011), et une biographie du conservateur-en-chef Gérald Van der Kemp : Un gentilhomme à Versailles (Perrin et Château de Versailles, 2005).
Il anime quotidiennement l'émission Au coeur de l'Histoire sur Europe 1 et participe à de nombreuses émissions historiques à la télévision.
