1871-1922 - Fils d'un médecin réputé, Marcel Proust naît à Paris dans une famille fortunée qui lui assure une vie facile et lui permet de fréquenter les salons mondains.
Après des études au lycée Condorcet, il devance l'appel sous les drapeaux. Rendu à la vie civile, il suit à l'Ecole des Sciences politiques les cours d'Albert Sorel et de Leroy-Beaulieu ; à la Sorbonne ceux de Begson dont l'influence sur son oeuvre sera majeure.
Vers 1900, il part à Venise et se consacre à des questions d'esthétique. Il publie une traduction du critique d'art anglais Ruskin (1904) dont les conceptions le marqueront. Après la mort de ses parents, sa santé se détériore. Il vit en reclus et s'épuise au travail. En 1919, il reçoit le prix Goncourt pour "A l'ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs". Trois ans plus tard, une bronchite l'emporte.
