Avec Jules Verne, Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) est un des pères fondateurs de la littérature de science-fiction, dont il abordera, souvent en pionnier, nombre des thèmes fondamentaux : le voyage temporel dans La Machine à explorer le Temps, les manipulations biologiques avec L'Île du Dr. Moreau, les pouvoirs surhumains avec L'Homme invisible ou les

Socialiste convaincu, H. G. Wells a cherché dans ses écrits à développer un point de vue moral sur la question du progrès scientifique et technologique. Il a ouvert la voie d'une science-fiction véritablement adulte, donnant au genre certains de ses plus immortels chefs-d'oeuvre.
