Pierre Loti de son nom Louis Marie Julien Viaud (1850, Rochefort-1923, Hendaye) a mené une double carrière, celles d'officier de marine et d'écrivain. En 1870, année du décès de son père, il prend la mer comme aspirant de première classe et participe sur une corvette de la marine à la guerre contre l'Allemagne. Il exerce cette fonction pendant quarante ans et voyage ainsi à travers le monde. De Tahiti à l'Extrême-Orient, en passant par l'Afrique du Nord et la Turquie – le pays adoré, les pays traversés servent de cadres à ses intrigues romanesques.
Il est élu à l'Académie française le 21 mai 1891. Pierre Loti s'affirme comme le plus grand écrivain exotique. Il est l'auteur entre autres de : Aziyadé et Pêcheur d'Islande, Matelot (édit. La Découvrance).
